what is alopecia?

The hair all over the body grow in cycles there are three phases anagen, catagen, telogen phase. During the growth phase which is called anagen the hair continues to increase in length at the rate of approximately one centimeter per month the length of the hair depends upon the duration of Anagen which varies from individual to individual At the end of the anagen phase the hair stopped going further and prepare itself for resting phase  and it lasts for three weeks

This phase of transformation is called catagen which lasts for about three weeks and the resting phase is called Telogen which lasts for three months at the end of the telogen phase the whole hair is shed off and replaced by new hair following the same cycle once again

Every individual must normally lose some hairs every day the number varies from time to time but a normal healthy individual loses 50 to 100 hair daily from the scalp though this hair loss is not noticed.

Under the influence of certain factors, the loss of here may become excessive and this is called Alopecia

Types of alopecia

Alopecia areata are generally classified into seven types based on the extent and the pattern of hair loss the types include

  • Alopecia areata
  • Alopecia totalis
  • alopecia universalis
  • alopecia traction
  • Androgenic alopecia
  • cicatrial alopecia
  • postpartum alopecia

Alopecia aerata-

This is most common in children and young adults it is the localized area of alopecia there is no itching redness scaling . it appears elsewhere on the scalp and even other areas of the body such as beard eyebrow moustache eyelashes and other regions of the body

Alopecia totalis-

When the hair loss process involves all the hair on the scalp it is for alopecia totalis. The difference between alopecia areata and totalis is the extent of hair loss on the scalp

Alopecia Universalis

When the disease become more severe and the hair loss occurs all over the body it is called Alopecia Universalis. Here you can see hair loss from the scalp from the from body even eyelashes and eyebrows.

CICATRIAL alopecia-

In this type hair follicles are involved in infective inflammatory process that leads to the destruction of the hair follicles and their replacement by an atrophic scar, follicular papules,  pustules may also be seen at the periphery of the lesion also called as scarring alopecia

Postpartum alopecia

Postpartum alopecia is a condition in which a woman loses her hair after having a baby when a woman is pregnant her harmones specially estrogen makes her hair stay in a growing face for a longer time this can make the hair seem thicker and denser but after giving birth when harmon level go back to normal or sometime drop and then we see an alopecia patch after the birth of a baby.

Androgenetic allopacia

It is also called as male pattern baldness it is common in adult male, it is an autosomal dominant character the genetic predisposition and the androgenic harmonic are both essential for its manifestation, it offers mostly in males but never before puberty.
